ICAM is a global provider of addiction and mental health education, certification training, accreditation, and continuing education. Our mission is to provide comprehensive, practical training for individuals who are committed to helping others overcome addiction and mental health challenges.
Our certified substance abuse counselor training programs are designed to offer flexibility without compromising academic quality. Students benefit from self-paced online learning, rolling admissions, and guidance in navigating state certification boards, voluntary boards, and international credentialing organizations. We also provide exam preparation resources and career tools, including job boards that support graduates as they enter or advance in the field.
ICAM is more than a training provider — it is a global community of professionals who share the goal of supporting recovery and mental wellness. Our instructors are certified and credentialed professionals with real-world experience who understand the path to becoming an addiction counselor.
Many certification boards require a high school diploma, while others require additional education. Our programs are designed to help students gain the knowledge necessary to pursue certification regardless of prior experience. Through a curriculum that evolves alongside the addiction treatment field, ICAM equips students with the training needed to build meaningful careers helping individuals and communities achieve lasting recovery.

ICAM’s School of Addiction Studies is designed for working professionals. By taking our classes online, you can complete 280 to 445 educational hours, along with 255 optional supervised practicum hours, in as little as six months.
Our program is one of the largest and most comprehensive addiction counselor training programs available. The curriculum is structured to meet the requirements of state boards, voluntary boards, and the IC&RC. Students are encouraged to sit for both their state or provincial certification exam as well as the international certification exam.
Our online learning format provides complete flexibility, allowing you to move through the program at your own pace. This learning format works well for students who prefer to manage their own schedule while working toward short-term learning goals and staying actively engaged throughout the program.
Each class includes true/false and multiple-choice questions similar to those found on state, provincial, and international board exams, helping prepare students to confidently pass their certification tests.

Rolling Admission
Begin your training whenever you’re ready. Our rolling admission model allows you to enroll at any time and move through courses at your own pace. Each class includes built-in exams, note-taking features, and open-book assessments so you can learn as you go. Scores are available instantly, allowing you to identify areas where additional review may be helpful.
Self-Paced Learning
Our program is designed to fit your schedule. Some students complete their training in as little as three months, while others take longer depending on their pace and commitments. Once enrolled, the courses remain available to you so you can take the time you need to fully absorb the material.
Accessible Faculty Support
Our instructors maintain an open-door policy for online students. Coursework is reviewed promptly, and faculty members are available to answer questions and provide guidance throughout your training. Students can also connect through our online community groups to collaborate and communicate with peers in real time.
Accessible & Affordable
All required books and course materials are included in the program price. There are no hidden fees, and all materials can be downloaded for printing, note-taking, and future reference. To make training accessible, we offer multiple payment options including per-course pricing, monthly payment plans, and discounted tuition for full payment.

Our program is designed for individuals who are passionate about helping those suffering from substance abuse and addiction.
Ideal candidates are individuals who want to support people in recovery by identifying addictive behaviors, addressing underlying issues, and helping clients develop strategies for lasting behavioral change and sobriety.
We encourage prospective students to review their state’s substance use counselor requirements to determine whether our program aligns with their certification path.
Our Admissions Counselors are also available to answer questions and help guide you through the process.
According to the CDC, addiction and mental health challenges increased by 30–40% during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a significant need for additional trained professionals.
As a result, the demand for certified addiction counselors continues to grow, and the current workforce is not large enough to meet that demand.
These certification requirements vary by state and credentialing organization, but most follow a similar pathway. The first step is completing the required educational hours. The second step typically involves supervised practicum experience and in-person internship or field hours, followed by passing the appropriate certification exam. ICAM provides the educational training portion through self-study and online learning platforms, allowing students to complete coursework from anywhere. In addition, we include supervised practicum opportunities within the cost of the program, meaning there are no hidden fees. Click the link below to view our full curriculum and syllabus.
With a base-level certification such as a CAC, salaries typically begin around $28,000 per year, depending on the state, province, or country. More experienced addiction counselors may earn $60,000–$75,000 per year, and those working in private practice may earn over $100,000 annually.
